Billionaire Yachts Collide Off the Coast of Italy

The world's two most famous yachts, owned by billionaires Ricardo Salinas Pliego and Laurene Powell Jobs, collided while anchored off Naples, Italy. Salinas, the Mexican retail mogul, posted a video on his Instagram account in which his yacht, the Lady Moura, was hit by Venus, the yacht built for Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Although no serious damage from the collision occurred, it did manage to give a large scratch to Salinas's vessel. Neither billionaire was aboard at the time of the accident, and Salinas joked on Twitter that his followers should buy Apple products to help offset the repair costs.

Salinas couldn't understand how that large of a yacht was missed by the crew and posted a video of the accident online. The Venus, which wasn't delivered until long after Jobs' death, is said to be worth $120 million and is infamous for its über-aerodynamic design courtesy of Philippe Starck. The Lady Moura, launched in 1990, is the stuff of legend for its over-the-top opulence and sleeps 27 guests.

Through Thursday, Powell Jobs was worth $14.4 billion and ranked as the world's 126th richest person. Salinas was worth an estimated $10 billion globally, ranking her 221st.

It is a moment which sums up perfectly the hedonistic world of billionaire yachts and all those little mishaps in life that not even the ultra-rich can avoid.
